Lloyd Richard Welch (1927–2023) was a mathematician and information theorist associated with the University of Southern California. Owosso’s downtown historic-district report includes him among people connected with the community.[1][2]
Education and career
Welch earned a bachelor’s degree at the University of Illinois in 1951 and a doctorate at Caltech in 1958. His career included the Jet Propulsion Laboratory, the Institute for Defense Analyses, and USC.[3]
Research and recognition
Welch contributed to communications coding and co-developed the Baum–Welch and Welch–Berlekamp algorithms. USC records his election to the National Academy of Engineering and receipt of the 2003 Claude E. Shannon Award. He retired in 1999 and died on December 28, 2023.[1]
Owosso connection: documentation still needed
Both the city’s historic-district report and Wikipedia’s Owosso list include Welch. However, the biographical records reviewed here do not establish the dates or circumstances of his residence or schooling in Owosso. Caltech identifies Detroit as his birthplace. This entry therefore preserves his documented local inclusion without labeling him Owosso-born or supplying an unverified local chronology.[2][4][3]
