Frederick Carl Frieseke (1874–1939) was born in Owosso and pursued a painting career centered in France. His family, schooling, and surviving work connect him with the city’s cultural history.[1]

Owosso beginnings

Frieseke’s father manufactured bricks, including those used in his childhood home. His grandmother encouraged his artistic interests. After graduating from Owosso High School in 1893, he studied in Chicago and New York before moving to Paris in 1898.[1]

Painting and recognition

His work entered major public collections in France and the United States. Museums acquiring his paintings included the Metropolitan Museum of Art, the Art Institute of Chicago, and the Detroit Institute of Arts.[1]

Local legacy

Lady With the Sunshade was given to the city of Owosso in 1926. The Shiawassee District Library documents that painting and Holland 1898 in its account of his local legacy. Frieseke died in Normandy on August 24, 1939.[1]
