Etta Doane Marden (1851–1946), born Etta Charlotte Doane in Owosso, worked as a Christian missionary and educator in Turkey for more than four decades.[1]
Education and mission work
The American Board of Commissioners for Foreign Missions commissioned Doane in 1881. She worked first in Marash and later in the Gedik Pasha district of Constantinople. The station’s activities included schooling, religious instruction, public lectures, and vocational work with women.[1]
Public speaking and retirement
Marden returned to the United States for speaking tours about her work, including missionary jubilee gatherings in 1910–1911. After retiring in 1925, she settled in Southern California and continued speaking at church events.[1]
She died in Claremont, California, on March 23, 1946. This introductory biography follows the cited secondary account; its links to period missionary publications offer starting points for deeper archival research.[1]
